Did You Know?
Aquaculture, the farming of fish and seafood in captivity, dates back centuries, but states such as New Jersey are investing today to encourage high-tech, large-scale commercial versions. Rutgers’ Multispecies Aquaculture Demonstration Facility, which is nearing completion in Cape May, will be used to perform research and training related to the development of aquaculture as a large-scale New Jersey industry. The complex, managed by Rutgers’ Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, will consist of a series of indoor tanks and outdoor ponds for raising finfish and shellfish, an indoor hatchery facility, and a pumping station to supply saltwater needs. Rutgers’ Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory has a more than 100-year tradition of disseminating research results and working cooperatively with state and federal agencies and the fisheries and aquaculture communities in southern New Jersey. The laboratory generates and disseminates research information directly applicable to all aspects of fisheries and aquaculture science, concentrating on species of commercial importance to New Jersey.
