The Thomas A. Edison Papers Project, based at Rutgers University, is one of the most ambitious editing endeavors ever undertaken by an American university. The project, which is co-sponsored by; the National Park Service, the New Jersey Historical Commission, and the Smithsonian Institution, compromises of 5 million pages of documents that chronicle the extraordinary life and achievements of Thomas Alva Edison, but remained hidden and inaccessible to members of the general public until 1978. However, a team Rutgers University editors, scholars, and students have since been turning this incomparable trove of Edisonia into a premier educational resource. Using information gathered from various sources including the Edison National Historic Site in West Orange, New Jersey, the Edison Papers team has produced a series of richly interactive publications. The ultimate goal is to produce a fifteen-volume selection of transcribed and annotated documents that elaborate on Edison's life and career, and serve as a resource for understanding the development of electrical and other technology. The Thomas A. Edison Papers Project is one of the ways in which the major research capabilities of Rutgers University partner with a team of diversely interested specialists in order to better serve New Jersey.
